To the top of Dachstein - 01.08.2007
|
The alarm clock is ringing shortly after 6 o´clock. I was
sleeping very well. It was rather cold at the hut, but therefore I
slept that good.
I´m walking outside and a wonderful day has just begun. In the
kitchen Susi, Dieter and Peter are preparing breakfast for us. But
for me, I don´t have time to take a long breakfast. I came up
to the hut late yesterday evening and now I have to fix crampons for
my guests. We also need piolets, Gurte and a rope.
There are all waiting for me, the days before it was snowing and today
is the first nice day and the sky is so incredibly blue.
On Gosaukamm the sun is already shining while Adamekhütte still
is in the shade of Schreiberwand. Susi gives two packages of "Manner",
so that I have something to eat.
It is cold but because of the sun it does not feel cold. I´m
guiding on group from Austria and a couple from Paris, Davide and
Cathrine. There are all in good shape and we are quite fast. One of
the Austrians, Josef, is nearly running and therefore we are reaching
soon the glacier. We put on the crampons and the rope because you
never know. If you are seeing the crevasses, there is normally no
danger, but the danger is, where you don´t see them and you
can´t see what is going on under the ice.
Today the glacier is so nice, so white, jus wonderful. It should be
like that the whole year. We meet Josef again and he joins our rope
team.
Soon we are reaching Mitterspitz, the walking conditions are perfekt
today. How the glacier has changed again? Before near Mitterspitz
there was a kind of hole, now the hole is filled up with huge rocks.
From Mitterspitz ice is falling down to the glacier. We are keeping
distance to the foot of Mitterspitz, so it is no problem for us.
Soon we reach Windlucke where Westgrat is beginning. On the horizon
we ca make out Großglockner Today Austrias highest mountain
is so near, the air is very dry.
We leave the crampons and piolets at Windlucke and start to climb
up. We are all on the rope and without many problems we are getting
higher. The conditions are a little bit wintry and the rock is sometimes
a little bit icy. But we are fast and overtake a group of three people.
I can see the peak and just a few minutes later we stand on the summit
of Dachstein. Perfect weather, the view is terrific; Traunstein, Grimming,
Hochalmspitz, Ankogel, Glockner, Venediger..... all the peaks you
can see really clear.
Photos, lunchbreak, it is busy today on Dachstein and so we are walking
back. Now I´m last and I watch my group from above. There are
doing fine, once we have to wait because there is a little traffic
jam.
At Windlucke we put on again the crampons and again on the rope we
walk back to Adamekhütte. I´m choosing a different way
down on the right side of the glacier. There we have to find our own
way because there is no track. I tell Davide to keep the rope tightbecause
of the crevasses. Near Steinerscharte the crevasses are like a layrinth
but we find a way to get out. But we have to jump...
Passing Hohes Kreuz we soon rech the end of the glacier. We put the
rope away and along some marks which are showing the position of the
glacier in the last 50 years we are walking back. It is really incredible
how the glacier lost substance in the last years.
We are reaching the path up to Dachstein, which we took this morning.
Notre tour, our tour is nearly finished and ten minutes later we are
back at the hut.
